DALLAS – AFI DALLAS International Film Festival Presented by Target, Founding Sponsor Victory Park announces Steven Sawalich’s MUSIC WITHIN as the festival’s Opening Night Gala presentation and Sarah Polley’s AWAY FROM HER as its Closing Night Gala presentation.
The festival will feature 191 feature films and shorts and 201 screenings as part of its highly anticipated debut with Target awarding prizes of $25,000 to the Target Filmmaker Award winners of the Narrative and International Documentary Competitions. The number of films far surpasses the festival’s original goal of 150 films.
The eleven-day festival will feature Signature and Centerpiece Screenings with red carpet entrances at theaters throughout the city, award presentations, filmmaker panels and other special events. The festival will highlight and celebrate the best in local and international filmmaking, culminating in an awards ceremony held at Dallas’ Ghost Bar on Sunday, April 1st. In addition to the Target Filmmaker Awards, filmmakers will vie for a $10,000 prize from 2929 Entertainment for the Best HD Feature, as well as awards in the Texas, Animation, Student Film and Shorts categories, and audience awards for Narrative Feature, Documentary and Shorts.
The newly inaugurated AFI Dallas Star will be presented to Lauren Bacall, Jack Valenti, David Lynch, Laura Dern, Marvin Hamlisch, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Sarah Polley, and to Veronique Peck for Gregory Peck, posthumously on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and the 40th Anniversary of AFI where he served as its first chairman of the board. Other confirmed attendees include Sydney Pollack, Morgan Freeman, Todd Wagner, Ron Livingston, Hector Elizondo, Michael Sheen, Bill Paxton, Michael Beach, Joey Lauren Adams, Craig and Randy Zisk, Barbara Kopple, Cecilia Peck and Doug Mankoff (Executive Producer of AWAY FROM HERE), among others.
MUSIC WITHIN will screen as the AFI DALLAS Opening Night Gala presentation on Thursday, March 22, 2007 at The Majestic Theatre in Dallas. Directed by Steven Sawalich and starring Ron Livingston, Melissa George, Michael Sheen, Hector Elizondo, Rebecca DeMornay, and Yul Vasquez, the film tells the true story of Richard Pimentel, a brilliant public speaker with a troubled past, who returns from Vietnam severely hearing-impaired and finds a new purpose in his landmark efforts on behalf of Americans with disabilities. The evening’s festivities will also include the first presentations of the festival’s Dallas Star Awards (the award is designed from Steuben Crystal, courtesy of Neiman Marcus) with festival guest Sydney Pollack presenting to Lauren Bacall and Marilyn & Alan Bergman.
AWAY FROM HER will screen as the AFI DALLAS Closing Night Gala presentation on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the Landmark Inwood Theatre in Dallas. Independent film veteran Sarah Polley makes her directing debut with an acclaimed character study of a man coping with the institutionalization of his wife because of Alzheimer’s disease who faces an epiphany when she transfers her affections to another man. The film stars Julie Christie, Olympia Dukakis, Michael Murphy, and Gordon Pinsent.
The Victory Park area will serve as the epicenter for the festival with screenings and special events emanating outwards in a hub and spoke style at Dallas venues such as the Landmark Magnolia Theatre, Angelika Film Center, AMC NorthPark 15, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Nasher Sculpture Center and neighboring schools such as Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University and University of North Texas, as well as the previously mentioned Majestic Theatre and Landmark Inwood Theatre. Victory Plaza will also host screenings of films from AFI’s 100 Greatest Films list on one of its HD projection screens nearly 24 hours a day throughout the festival.
AFI DALLAS reflects the efforts of an impressive combination of board members and sponsors, who have made the festival a reality. Festival Founder Liener Temerlin, who also serves as the festival’s Director and Chairman as well as being an AFI Trustee Emeritus who initiated the original concept for AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies series, stresses that there was a clear desire to set AFI DALLAS apart from other festivals. “From the outset, we decided we wanted the AFI Dallas International Film Festival to be a festival that puts films and filmmakers on a pedestal – not unlike the art world does with great art or a symphony does with great music. Artistic Director Michael Cain—who originated and ran the Deep Ellum Film Festival for the past seven years prior to teaming with Temerlin for AFI DALLAS —agrees and adds “This festival is about great films and filmmakers and in that spirit we have worked diligently to form a strong and mutually supportive bond with Dallas’ other film festivals to help honor these new visions.
